Cranes I

Cranes is a two-part study of one of nature’s most graceful silhouettes—long necks, lifted wings, and quiet, communal rhythm. Layered in soft earth tones—ivory, sand, smoke, and weathered gold—the series feels like a memory of wetlands: wind moving through reeds, water holding reflected light, and a gathering of birds that seems both fleeting and timeless. Across cultures, cranes have carried symbolic weight as emblems of longevity, good fortune, and peace; here, that meaning is translated into gesture, atmosphere, and a calm sense of unity.

In Cranes, the flock gathers in a gentle choreography—curved necks and overlapping forms creating a sense of shared attention, as if the group is listening to the same hush in the air. Elaine’s brushwork keeps the bodies luminous and softened at the edges, letting the birds feel present without becoming rigid. The composition holds an unmistakable stillness—like a breath drawn together—honoring the crane as both a living creature and a symbol of enduring grace.
